We wear textiles every day, especially in windy, rainy Scotland, where they cover every inch of our body. How, then, could fabrics not only serve as a shield that physically protects us from the elements, but also offer additional benefits by reacting with rain (water)? Through research into scientific possibilities—such as the specialized finishes developed by companies like Devan Chemicals—and by engaging with the University of Glasgow's Chemistry Department and Scotland-based skincare brands, I am exploring ways to merge the textile finishing industry, biotechnology, and traditional folk protective aesthetics.
